Activated Sicilian
Almond
A day dedicated to the "Bioma" research project on activated almonds will take place on Wednesday, May 14. The event will be held at 10 AM in Camporeale, at the Valdibella cooperative's headquarters, for the project's presentation.
This initiative is supported by funds from the Sicilian Rural Development Program (PSR Sicilia) 2014-2020 (Sub-measure 16.1: "Support for the establishment and management of EIP operational groups on agricultural productivity and sustainability").
Several presentations are planned to introduce the research project, which involves the delicate process of activating and pre-germinating Sicilian almonds. This is to evaluate their nutritional, organoleptic, and economic benefits.
Opening the proceedings will be Pietro Vaccaro, president of the Makellon cooperative and leader of the "Bioma" operational group. Next, Salvatore Zuppardo, the project coordinator, will illustrate the development opportunities that research can offer to agriculture.
Tommaso Radice will offer insights into the nutritional advantages of seed sprouting. An Italian entrepreneur, Radice recognized the potential of this practice more than ten years ago, subsequently founding Germogliamo, a company that sells diverse seed varieties throughout Europe. "Sprouts," states Radice, "are a formidable source of phytocompounds such as polyphenols, organosulfur compounds, and prebiotics, which help maintain the balance of the intestinal microbiota and restore the correct equilibrium among its various components."
Providing the leading research perspective will be Marzia Innocenti, a researcher from the University of Florence's Neurofarba Department, a key partner institution in the project. Gaspare Solano, a technologist and quality manager at the Valdibella cooperative, will be responsible for illustrating the initial data documented during the project's early phases. Finally, Massimiliano Solano will re-emphasize the importance of almond cultivation in Sicily, not only from an agronomic and cultural perspective but especially concerning its agroecological management, which aims to evaluate the crop's positive impact across various aspects.
